UC Santa Cruz earned its first victory of the season with a win over Pacific Union, at the Hotel Paradox Opening Weekend Kickoff at Kaiser Permanente Arena last Sunday. The final score was 79-56. The Slugs never gave up the lead, as they were led by top scorers sophomore Austin Steadman with 16 points and Tyler Berkness with 14.

Freshman Tyler Berkness, from Bella Vista High School, had a big game in his first career start, with 14 points and 4 three point shots. Throw in fellow freshmen Ilan Zur, from Summerfield Waldorf High School, near double double, scoring 9 points with team leading 8 Rebounds and the bench lead by Spencer Wells and Marshall Arnwine Jr., and the Slugs never looked back.

Look out for their next game as the Men’s Basketball team enters the Hilton Slugs Winter Tournament back at the Kaiser Permanente Arena. The Slugs first face the Linfield Wildcats. Then based on both their outcome of the game, and the outcome of the tournament game, the winner or loser of St. Vincent and Cal-Tech.
